Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority sponsored Make My Bedroom AMAZING!, a contest for kids between the ages of 11-14 living in our North Phoebus housing community. Forty-six eligible contestants were asked the following questions:

1) Why should I win a bedroom makeover; 2) How will a bedroom makeover help me to succeed; and 3) What contributions do I make to my school, community, and family. We received five essays.

Hampton City Councilman Will Moffett and Sabrina Carr, from the City of Hampton’s Community Development Department, served as judges. After tallying the judge’s scores, the lucky winner of the contest was 14 year old Promis Charity.

In answering the question as to why she should win the makeover, she said it would be a great opportunity for her to accomplish something. When she was younger her mother always told her to make a plan before she gets older, not to get lost, to stay on track…to make a plan to become successful.

Promis has set her sights on becoming a forensic psychologist and realizes that to do that, she must remain focused and be at the top of her class. She said winning the bedroom makeover would provide her with a conducive environment in which to stay focused and in her words…, study, study. She also wanted a bedroom that would reflect her artistic style.

Promis is in the International Baccalaureate program at Hampton High School and has been on the AB honor roll since the 2nd grade. She was on her school’s dance team and participates in Authority and school clubs and volunteers at the North Phoebus Community Center.

A reception was held for her family and friends on the day of the reveal. The look on her face at the reveal was priceless! She walked around the room touching everything.
